The Sneaky Chef

Talk tuesday Unfortunately, two of my four children have been found to have high cholesterol.  The other two haven't been tested yet.  I feel like a failure as a mother when I say this.  I decided to get myself tested because many of my immediate family also has high cholesterol.  Luckily for me, my test came back normal.  I do make a lot of effort trying to feed my family well.  We rarely eat out, and I never fry the food we eat at home.  (Except for the occasional Laura's things)  But I am reevaluating what we eat and how I can make it better.

This week I am trying something new.  My recipes for this week's dinners will be from "The Sneaky Chef."  It's about hiding vegetables in food so your children will never know what they ate.  I'm not above deceiving my children!  In fact, I find great amusement in it!  Try it, you'll like it!

So, this week I am serving:
IQ Tuna Patties (with white beans, and wheat germ)
Pigs In Healthy Blankets (wheat germ, wheat flour, carrots, and sweet potato)
Crunchy chicken Tenders (wheat germ, wheat flour, carrots, sweet potato, almonds)
Maxed Out Meatballs with my sweet & sour sauce (spinach, broccoli, peas, wheat germ)

For snacks I will also be making Cheesy Animal Crackers (almonds, wheat four, wheat germ, chickpeas) and Unbelievable Chocolate Chip Cookies (almonds, white beans, oats, wheat four, and wheat germ).

I'll let you know how these turn out and if my kids can taste the hidden vegetables.  Hopefully it'll turn out better than my Hibilly Chili!

How do KIDS have high cholesterol? I had no idea kids could have high cholesterol.
I love this Sneaky Chef idea. I've been sneaking wheatgerm into recipes for a long time now. Nobody ever knows.
As for me and my cholesterol....GOOD NEWS! Five years ago it was 205 (borderline high--the cutoff is 200), then two years ago it dropped to 198. And as of my last test, two weeks ago, I have successfully dropped it to 180!!! Whoo-hoo! Yay me!
I attibute it to eating almonds nearly every day, and eating whole grain breads and crackers. Along with that I limit my meats and eggs. And of course, I get those 5 servings of fruits and vegetables in.

I am adding that book to my amazon wishlist. My husband was just talking the other day about hearing about a cookbook like this and wanting to check it out. Now I don't even have to figure out what book it was. Thanks for posting about it. I'll look forward to hearing how things go for you.
